Family Group Conferencing

Family Group Conferencing

Family Group Conferencing (FGC) focuses on the strengths of families and is a problem-solving process that provides families with the opportunity to make important decisions together within a support system. Families may use FGC to resolve problems due to an out-of-home placement of a child, during a divorce or custody challenges, or when parents and/or caregivers are having challenges and need additional support.

FGC is organized by a trained facilitator who is independent of a family’s situation. The FGC facilitator will create a space to bring together the family, extended family, other supports to family, and service providers to meet and make decisions to create and carry out a plan for a child and/or sibling group. After the first meeting, families will then meet independently with the FGC facilitator to develop a plan that the family structures. The facilitator does not make any decisions about a family plan. They will help write the plan and ensure that it is distributed to all that had participated in the meeting.
