Since our founding in 1990, we’ve grown from one residential group home in Grand Rapids to offering numerous programs throughout Northern Minnesota to best meet and support the mental health needs of clients.

  • 1980s

    Jim Christmas notices a gap in services for youth in the northland and envisions an organization that would support keeping families together and youth connected to their community.

  • 1990

    North Homes Children and Family Services is founded.

  • 1998

    North Homes begins providing adoption services for children from birth to age 17, under State or Tribal guardianship.

  • 2001

    Bemidji Office Opened & School Based Programming Started

  • 2004

    The ITASKIN Center opens as a partnership between North Homes and Itasca County. Over the years, the ITASKIN Center has continued to expand its program offerings in order to be able to transition youth to the most appropriate, and least restrictive setting needed to support their mental health needs.

  • 2007

    North Homes starts providing school-based services in the Bemidji school district & North Homes became a “Rule 29” agency.

  • 2013

    Deer River Office Opened

  • 2016

    Camp North Homes is opened, providing powerful new experiences for youth and adults in an outdoor setting. Along with that, North Homes became a “Community Mental Health Center”!
